Discover the 2026 Torneo Apertura playoff bracket, Boca and River matchups, possible paths, and how to get tickets.

Published At 10:44 AM

The regular season of the 2026 Torneo Apertura has officially come to an end, and the matchups that will open the Argentine football playoffs are now confirmed. With historic rivalries, packed stadiums, and knockout football, the most intense stage of the tournament begins.

The Round of 16 bracket features several exciting clashes right from the start, especially for Boca Juniors and River Plate, who once again emerge as two of the main contenders and will face high-profile matchups against Huracán and San Lorenzo respectively.

In addition, the standings from the regular season will play a major role: several top clubs will keep home-field advantage throughout most of their path to the final.

How the 2026 Torneo Apertura bracket looks

The Round of 16 will be played between Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10. The teams with the best overall records will host their matches in this stage and in the following rounds, except for the final, which will take place at a neutral venue.

Matches on Saturday, May 9

Matches on Sunday, May 10

Boca Juniors in the 2026 playoffs: La Bombonera as the starting point

Boca will begin its playoff campaign hosting Huracán at La Bombonera, in one of the most anticipated matches of the Round of 16.

After an intense regular season, the Xeneize established itself as one of the main title contenders and will look to take advantage of home-field advantage and the weight of a stadium expected to be completely sold out due to the huge demand for Boca Juniors tickets.

Boca vs Huracán: one of the most attractive Round of 16 matchups

The clash between Boca and Huracán stands out as one of the most interesting matchups of the opening round. La Bombonera will once again host a knockout match, with the special atmosphere that defines decisive nights in Argentine football.

For Boca, there is also additional pressure: to seriously compete for the domestic title again and keep alive the hope of ending the semester fighting for a trophy.

Boca’s possible path to the final

The bracket offers Boca a difficult but favorable road in terms of home advantage.

First, they must get past Huracán. Then they would face the winner of Argentinos Juniors vs Lanús in the quarterfinals, while later rounds could potentially bring clashes against Talleres, Belgrano, Unión, or Independiente Rivadavia.

Boca’s home advantage throughout the playoffs

One of Boca’s biggest advantages is that, thanks to its regular season performance, it will keep home-field advantage against almost all of its potential rivals. In a knockout format, every detail matters, and playing at home can become a decisive factor.

If Boca advances:

  • it would host Lanús, Argentinos Juniors, Belgrano, Talleres, or Unión.
  • it would only lose that advantage in a hypothetical semifinal against Independiente Rivadavia from Mendoza, the team with the highest points total of the regular season.

This means Boca could play most of the playoffs at La Bombonera, a stadium that has historically been a major factor in knockout rounds.

The only exception would be the final, which will be played at a neutral venue.

River Plate in the 2026 Torneo Apertura playoffs

River will face one of the toughest matches of the opening round: the clásico against San Lorenzo at the Monumental.

With a stadium that continues to break attendance records and a squad used to playing decisive matches, River appears as one of the top contenders for the title, generating massive interest in buying River Plate tickets.

River vs San Lorenzo: the most anticipated Round of 16 match

The clash between River and San Lorenzo is likely the most anticipated match of the entire opening round.

It is a historic rivalry in Argentine football, played in a knockout setting and at the Monumental. Everything points toward an incredible atmosphere for one of the hottest matches of the playoffs.

Beyond the emotional and football aspects, the match also has major implications for the bracket, since River could face a very demanding road to the final afterward.

Which rivals could River face in the quarterfinals and semifinals?

If River defeats San Lorenzo, it would face the winner of Vélez vs Gimnasia.

Later on, teams such as Racing, Rosario Central, Independiente, and Estudiantes appear on the other side of the bracket, potentially creating extremely high-level semifinal clashes.

River’s side of the bracket looks especially competitive, featuring several clubs experienced in decisive stages.

How many matches could River play at the Monumental?

River also benefits greatly from its regular season performance. On its road to the final, it would host all of its potential rivals. The only scenario in which River could lose this advantage would be a hypothetical semifinal against Estudiantes de La Plata, since Estudiantes collected more points during the first stage of the tournament.

This makes the Monumental one of the central venues of the playoffs, as River could potentially play almost its entire path to the final in front of its home fans.

The other standout playoff matchups

Beyond Boca and River, the bracket also features several other highly attractive games.

Talleres vs Belgrano: the Córdoba derby

Córdoba will host one of the biggest matches of the Round of 16. Talleres and Belgrano will meet in a derby that paralyzes the province and promises tremendous intensity.

Estudiantes vs Racing

Two clubs with continental pedigree and competitive squads will face each other in La Plata. The last two finalists of Argentine football meet once again in this tournament.

Rosario Central vs Independiente

Rosario Central, one of the strongest teams in Argentine football, will try to take advantage of home field and Ángel Di María’s presence against an Independiente side hoping to end a 24-year domestic title drought.

Argentinos Juniors vs Lanús

Two historically competitive teams in short tournaments will meet in La Paternal in a series that could be far more balanced than expected.
